Exciting Things Happening on the Sunshine Coast

We already know that Maroochydore is fast tracked to become the business, community and employment hub of the Sunshine Coast with the proposed development of the Maroochydore City Centre. However there is also a lot of other new development projects happening around the Sunshine Coast.

Sunshine Plaza Extension
Consists of the addition of a new David Jones store, a refurbished Myer store, a new Big W store and at least 100 additional new retailers, expanding the floor space by one-third. Plus there will bet two new "multi-level" car parks built near the Kmart entrance.

The New Sunshine Coast University Hospital
The hospital, opened in April 2017 will offer a range of free public hospital services with about 450 beds, with the ability to grow to more than 738 beds and then to 900 beds beyond 2021 if needed.

Bli Bli Village Centre
The recently completed Bli Bli Village Centre redevelopment comprises of a health precinct, offices, complimentary retail stores, and a tavern, with parking for 174 vehicles.

Kawana Shopping World
There will be a major extension to the centre, which will add a cinema with up to 10 screens, more specialty stores and around 750 extra carparks to one of the Sunshine Coast's main shopping centres.

Aussie World Redevelopment
The park has recently undergone some refurbishment with will new rides, attractions, amenities and a green space for events. Plus the former Ettamogah Pub will double in size and have a brand new look.

New Waterpark Proposed for Glenview
ACTVE Waterpark, commenced early in 2017 on Steve Irwin Way at Glenview is expected to cost $400 million. The lifestyle and water park has been designed to feature an extreme water sports facility.

Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion
The New Runway Project will be open and operating in 2020.The project will deliver a new 2450m x 45m runway, runway end taxiway loops, an expanded apron and terminal facilities, a new air traffic control tower and associated infrastructure.The extensions will enable direct flights to more destinations across Australia, Asia and the Western Pacific.

New Sports Facility
Planning is ongoing for a new high performance sports facility at Lake Kawana, near the Sunshine Coast Stadium. While still in the pipelines, the proposed hub would cover 11,000 sq m of land at the northern end of Lake Kawana.

Maroochydore City Centre
The vision for delivery of the Maroochydore City Centre PDA includes:

  • creating a city heart in Maroochydore
  • delivering fully approved and serviced land for commercial, retail, residential, civic, cultural and community uses
  • building publically accessible waterways as a defining feature
  • facilitating rail based public transport via CAMCOS and possibly future light rail
  • creating a multi-modal public transport system
  • delivering a new road network to provide additional capacity to the existing road network within Maroochydore
  • providing interconnected public open space
  • establishing a central Sunshine Coast location for regional arts and entertainment.

This new development for Maroochydore will make it the "capital" of the Sunshine Coast and will bring more visitors to the city.
